I know, i thought id never say this but ive grown a bit bored of KSP.
With BF4 coming out most of my game time is taken up playing that.
I think ill uninstall KSP and re-install it in a few updates time when lots more content and features are added.

I got detoured into space planes. I'm currently working on a space plane to the mun and back. I've also created a mothership for my space plane that works 30% of the time...

I've picked this back up again. I too am trying space planes, Im struggling though. My idea is to use jet engines to get me to as high and fast as possible, then when the intake air runs out i can switch over to rockets.

I can't design a stable craft just yet though. One that is stable in flight and fast im wondering if i have to choose between the two???

Ill get there in the end, im just having fun experimenting at the moment.

Space planes are interesting. Are you using SAS or ASAS with your planes? I have to use those for my planes to fly at all.

I had the same issues you mentioned. Go back to basics and start small: 1 engine, 1 intake and the small command module. You should be able to get these smaller planes fast enough that you experience the ionized plasma effect like your don on re-entry. Just cruise on up to 15Km and level out. you speed should dramatically increase shortly there after and you can climb higher. I've been able to get to 21Km or 22Km before my engines starve of oxygen if I'm going fast enough.

You guys may find this helpful. It won't get you into space, but it's a good start. Especially if you start using Ferram Aerospace Research (FAR) mod.

Making a plane get into space isn't all that hard, especially when you use a single Rapier (stock) or Sabre (B9) engine. That way you don't have to deal with engine thrust imbalance, which can create unproductive flight characteristics. And keeping the size and weight down helps. It's when you want to use a spaceplane to launch something large like an orange tank that real problems begin.

That's a great link Finger. I had been trying to get a space plane to Minmus and back. Initially I was using very small, 1 manned craft and ended up stranding 4 Kerbins on Minmus. Using the 1 person lander cans I created a 4 person plus a pilot space plane. Getting to orbit isn't hard but I still have not been able to make a space plane that can get to Minmus and back on it's on, an SSTMaB, Single Stage to Moon and Back. I've been rendezvousing with dedicated tanker station in Kerbin orbit where I offload any extra jet fuel and refuel my LFO tanks. This gets me enough to get to mimus and back. I'm not using Ferrum yet but am using B9 parts. I hear that Ferrum makes getting out of the atmosphere easier in some circumstances because it does a more accurate job of calculating drag. I would love to be able to get to a moon carrying something in a large B9 cargo bay.

Well I got my 4 Kerbals safely off of Minmus and back home. I now have a stranded SSTO space plane on Duna. Time for another rescue mission...

Congrats on getting your kerbals back. I've had some of the same problems with my latest career game so I understand the frustration. Though I think my designs are on track, my problem is those ADD moments when I burn off too much fuel while saying "Scott Manley does this all the time!"
