Word is getting around, (came to me from Grabbi via Bluemax) that the Gamespy hosted services are shutting down as of May 31, 2014.

http://www.pcgamesn.com/goodbye-gamespy-online-service-will-shut-down-may-31st

This impacts, to at least some degree, many games. Bluemax was being rather alarmist, pushing some such angle that all BF1942 players may need to connect to servers via the Pixel Fighter toolbox. It was clear his information was coming second hand from Grabbi so I took it with a grain of salt. Although Gamespy does not just match making for BF1942 but also plays a role in CD-Key authentication.

I'm assuming, the worse case outcome is, I'll have to set our BF1942 server from internet mode to LAN mode in the blackbag ops manager and we'll all have to connect using the +joinServer <ipaddress> command line parameter. But we'll see.

Is anyone else aware of the pending Gamespy shutdown. Does anyone else have any insight into how this might impact BF1942 or anyone of the many other games Gamespy supports? I'm sure I'd find any such info interesting.

I did some more research on what games will be affected by the Gamespy servers shutdown.

According to this article, the people at EA Games might actually lift a finger to help Battlefield users:

Today is the day. The gamespy servers are supposed to be down now. I just jumped into BF 1942 and updated my server list. I see 233 servers and 804 players on line. I picked a random server and joined it, no problem.

To make sure this wasn't just static information I brought up two machines and ran BF 1942 side by side. I updated their server lists over and over and I saw numbers of servers and numbers of players vary, mostly in sync between the two clients. So I'm relatively sure I'm not looking at static data, rather, two clients of a functioning server.

So, to me, it looks like either the gamespy server is still up and running or BF 1942 is functioning just fine without the gamespy server.

Does anyone else have any info, knowledge or experience with this?

This article at the EA site puts the drop dead date at "the end of June".

From time to time I've seen people post here at don't camp messages of the form, "Let's have a DC-Final conquest night for old times sake." Well, this might be the last month in which such a thing can be done. I'll gladly host such an event if there is any interest for it whatsoever.

As I recall it was 30 minute time limit, 64 total players (32 vs 32) and the rotation went something like this:

Bocage
DC_Al_Khafji_Docks
DC_Basrahs_Edge
DC_Basrah_Nights
DC_Battle_of_73_Easting
DC_DesertShield
DC_LostVillage
DC_Oil_Fields
DC_Sea_Rigs
DC_Urban_Siege
El_Alamein
Gazala
GuadalCanal
Inshallah_Valley
Kharkov
Market_Garden
Stalingrad

PS
Suggestions and requests are more than welcome.

Gamespy service for BF1942 has finally gone down. The service ended some time this past week. One can still play BF1942 but one must know the port and either the ip address or the fully qualified machine and domain name of the server.

For example:

In Windows 7 64 bit assuming a normal all defaults install:
Right click your desktop background and choose:
New->Shortcut
for the:
Type the location of the item:
text fill in, enter exactly this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\BF1942.exe" +restart 1 +joinServer 74.91.115.222:14567

press next
for the:
Type a name for this shortcut:
text fill in, enter a name for this shortcut such as
BF1942CHIserver
and press finish

now there will be a shortcut on your desktop called BF1942CHIserver that will bring you directly to our server.

The mods we play are all posted here, as well as the blue and red map rotations:
