For some reason the use of the word "gay" has been picked up by nearly every online gamer. Generally it does not carry the full on hatred or bigotry associated with it as do other words such as "fag." But it is still derogatory and in the realm of hate speech.
Dontcamp.com seeks to play with a community of good sportsmen (sportsperson...?). If you were playing a pick-up basketball game at your local YMCA with a bunch of strangers, how likely would you describe one of their play styles as gay? If you were to do that, do you think you'd be asked to leave?
While online gaming isn't the YMCA, we ask, why not? Just because we're anonymous doesn't mean we have to go out of our way to be jerks and assholes to other players on the server.
I'm not saying you can't cuss. Feel free to use the seven dirty words: shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits. But don't use them to abuse other players. Yes, using this language when talking to your friends may be acceptable to them, I doubt most strangers would appreciate it. And yes, you may have to use this language with Marines, I guess that is the one exception, but I would check with the Marine first, otherwise you may get your ass handed to you on a rusty platter.
So in the end, be a good sportsman. This goes beyond language to include your actions (like tea-bagging). I guarantee if you tea-bagged me in a real life game of football, I'd punch you in the nuts, and would be justified. So let's not go there. Be kind and respectful to other players. |
