I've had rehearsals each night and haven't gotten anything into orbit. I've tried some preliminary designs on the ground but haven't come up with a a design for a new station.

Dan, do you have a screen shot to help line these guys up? I'm finding that one docking port is ever so slightly off the the other. It still seems secure enough and maybe I'm being anal, but I'm wondering if there is a way to get them closer.

Of course, I could have just RTFM to fix my wobbling issues:

A mod which offers a different workaround for this problem is the Quantum Strut mod. Or, one can use time warp to force-stop all rotation, wobbling, and such. Note, this may not work every time.

There is also a docking strut mod: http://kerbalspaceport.com/docking-strut/

I've been without internet for a few days and I'm using a portable hotspot
to connect for the next few days when, allegedly, the cable connection
will be restrored.

So I haven't installed MechJeb because there have been a lot of bug
reports and I like the idea of doing it manually. I've even reached some
proficiency at docking, though it can be really tedious.

For now I'm going to keep working on the station, but I think I'll give MJ a
try and hopefully save some time.

Thanks for the inspiration and instruction guys. I could probably
do a whole series of YouTube videos on what not to do.

Two questions: How do I upload screenies to Steam? Does the shot have
to be taken while Steam is running or when KSP is started through Steam?

How do I get girders and panels to connect without going node to node (green balls)? I have been able to connect a girder to a girder using one of the nodes, but it seems at least one node has to be used to connect them. Same goes for panels and I beams.

Even though Mechjeb has an autopilot for docking, I still manually dock. Even if you decide not to use the launch, or rendezvous, or docking autopilots, Mechjeb has some great flight information to help manually fly your craft.

Finger, press F12 to take a screenshot if you launched from steam, If you didnt, then im guessing the Print screen button would work but i havent tested it.

Oh and For screenshots, pressing F2 will remove all HUD elements, giving a cleaner picture

Not sure what my target was still set to...

I think that orbit was 95km or so, it was pretty sloppy as I just wanted to try this out.

So I've made a little progress.

I've installed MJ and found it does well to save time getting into orbit and
getting to docking range. However docking is not perfect and i need to
manually dock when within 50 m or so to avoid a collision.

Also learned is that only screenshots taken with F12 while Steam is
running allows me to upload to the Steam cloud. Screenshots taken with
F1 areaved in the KSP\screenshots folder and cannot be uploaded to the
cloud even when the format is changed to .jpg.

So here is a little visual progress report:

As you can probably see, the three docking arms are misaligned with the
ship docked perpendicular to the station core. I'm not sure I'll bother
realigning everything since it doesn't seem crucial at this point.

In case you're wondering, the reasons for those extentions are twofold:
A) Because it's fun to try to dock things.
B) Because I want to have room to add more crap.

Thanks Wabbit Smile

I'll share two shots I think were cool via Image Shack.

What happens when you keep the throttle at maximum inside the atmosphere...

Jebediah trying to make it home without a ship...

Makes a nice wallpaper too.

I really like those Trusses Finger, the way you have used the Struts is very inventive.

Thanks Dan. I find the larger docking clamps easier to dock with so as I
send up larger sections they will be easier to dock and move around.
And Wabbit gave me an idea for docking ships side by side to send out to
distant orbits.

I really like that lander design. Can it be re-captured in the cargo bay after launch? How does that work?

In theory yes, it can be re-captured in the bay as it uses docking ports to connect to the bay.

However, one design flaw i have observed in testing was that i only used one docking port. So i was unable to detatch from the bay, I need to use 2 but if i do that i run out of room, so i may have to add another bay section

Dan, in every one of those pics I right clicked and tried to rotate the view. Duh.

Great idea using the I beam.

How many of these parts will still be useable with the next patch?

All of them from what i know.

The next patch is bringing a carreer mode in, which will limit the parts untill you unlock them, but there will still be a sandbox mode.
