Guys,
As you may know, I live in the UK, which means I have never fired a gun in real life, however, i think i may have a decent grasp on the physics on how they work.

I'm presuming that it is understood that recoil is a side effect of the opposite reaction of the bullet accelerating down the barrel, forcing the barrel backwards, and because it is gripped below, it raises up each time it fires.

Mu idea comes from counteracting this energy by harnessing the waste exhaust gasses generated by the round ignition.
This waste gas, which would be at a very high pressure (equal to the pressure pushing the bullet along the barrel) would be channelled into another barrel which would enclose a counter weight. This counter weight would be pushed along the barrel forwards until it reaches the end, where it would be decelerated by a spring or damper system. and, in theory, forcing the barrel of the gun downwards, counteracting the upwards motion of natural recoil.

Obviously, there would be an energy loss by the exhaust gasses having to travel into the new barrel, and also i understand that they are used to load the next round into the chamber somehow, But i'm confident that they can be used to counter recoil as well.

Am i just talking out of my arse again? or do you think there is potential?

You'd have to fire it really slow for the weight to reset. In which case why would you care about recoil?

There are a lot of muzzle brakes and compensators for pistols that use the expanding gases to keep the muzzle down.

But actually, you simply invented an AEK-971: http://youtu.be/-73_5LWMgdc
The AEK has a counter weight the moves forward to counter act the momentum of the bolt moving to the rear.

A more elegant ans simpler solution to eliminating recoil with a pistol is to get the barrel on the same vertical plane as the shooter's wrist. Today's semi-autos won't allow for that but one could make a revolver to this.

In fact Chiappa has a revolver that comes close to this, the Rhino:

The Rhino can be considered an upside-down revolver. Unlike traditional revolvers, the Chiappa Rhino fires from the bottom of the cylinder, not the top. This allows a bore axis that is in-line with the webbing of your thumb and greatly reduces muzzle flip.
